Arthur Tivoli has taught me the hat base that I used on this sculpture. The one eyed sailor face design I learned from Ken Stillman. Combined they create this wonderful mask/hat. If you ever have a chance to attend a workshop of them, be there!
-
1 Make a standard helmet from a pink 260Q. Make sure the tip of the balloon is a bit larger then you would normally because the tip will serve as the nose.
-
2 Turn the standard helmet into a base where you can add on facial details. In the top spoke, make a small bubble and a pinch twist on top. In the side spokes, also add small bubbles.
-
3 Make a deep tulip twist in the white 260Q, lock on the top of the sailor. Go down with the white balloon and wrap it around the nose. This will make the 2 eyes. The pink bubble is the eye the one eyed sailor always has closed.
-
4 Cut of the remainder of the white, don't deflate, make a loop from it.
-
5 Put this loop over the deep tulip twist finishing the hat of the sailor.
-
6 Make a pinch twist in the 2nd pink balloon and lock it into one of the side spokes.
-
7 Make 2 bubbles to create a splitted jar added by a pinch twist. lock this into the other side spoke. cut off and deflate remainder of the 2nd pink balloon.
-
8 A pale blue balloon with a tulip twist followed by 2 small pinch twists will make a great pipe. Make sure the rest of the balloon is filled, but not inflated. Jam it in the corner of the mouth.
-
9 Draw on eyes, and remember, the pink bubble represents an eye that is closed.
-
10 And put on top of somebody's head.
